Articling Student Program in London, Ontario 2021-2022

Join the growing team at Lakin Afolabi Law to gain valuable hands-on experience and build long lasting connections in the legal community of London!

Ready to Join the Team?

Lakin Afolabi Law Professional Corporation is looking for a dedicated and organized articling student to assist in all aspects of legal work including research, filing applications, providing opinions, drafting letters and memoranda, analysis of legislation, and assisting in the review, resolution and investigation of client files.

This rapidly-growing diverse law office started as a criminal/quasi-criminal practice and has since expanded to include family law, immigration law, and civil litigation. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter with good time management skills and very nicely developed anticipatory skills. More than anything, the ability to take initiative and predict and undertake the next steps in a process without being prompted is imperative in this office.

A strong sense of empathy is necessary as you will be interacting with individuals who are underprivileged, have mental health issues, and are battling addictions. The office environment is easy going, but the work is fast-paced and unpredictable. Students are expected to manage their time well and produce results. The successful candidate will be expected to figure things out independently but will be provided the resources to do so and encouraged to ask questions when unsure. If you are looking to gain hands-on experience in dealing with and resolving real cases – we would love to hear from you.

Student Experiences

There is simply no replacement to actual courtroom experience. Here, at Lakin’s firm, you get a variety of experiences at a high volume. Managing your time is critical as a defence lawyer, and you get a head start to understanding what that means by working here.

A lot of a lawyer’s work is done behind the scenes, locked up in an office and oftentimes late into the day. Preparation and anticipatory skills is what makes a good lawyer. Working here has taught me that there is absolutely no replacement to meticulous preparation.
I’ve come to understand many of the practical aspects of criminal law that cannot be learned simply in the classroom. Seeing the theories and lessons I’ve learned in the classroom applied in the courts is of tremendous value to me as I embark on my own career.
