Lakin Afolabi Law

Lakin Afolabi Law Professional Corporation is a practice of criminal lawyers in London, Ontario looking for an articling student to assist in all aspects of legal work including: research, filing applications, providing opinions, drafting letters and memoranda, analysis of legislation, and assisting in the review of disclosure, court appearances, and the resolution and investigation of client files. Our law office practices criminal and quasi-criminal law exclusively.

Our work culture is collegial: we look out for each other and we collaborate on all fronts. In exchange, we will provide you with real experience, and you will gain it very quickly. We are kind to each other, and we take a human approach to law with our clients, as well as with our colleagues. The office culture is easy going, but the work is fast paced and unpredictable.

Should you be selected for this role, we will provide you a welcome gift: a custom, made to measure suit or a briefcase of your choosing.
Without question, you have to be a self-starter with excellent time management skills and well developed anticipatory skills. More than anything, the ability to take initiative, predict, and undertake next steps in a process without being prompted is imperative in this office.
You will be exposed to all aspects of criminal defence ranging from the initial consultation to sentencing. Where appropriate and permitted by the law, you will be given carriage of your own files to conduct hearings and guilty pleas.
The majority of our clients are private clients; however, occasional legal aid work is also undertaken.

Strong empathy is necessary as you will be interacting with individuals who are underprivileged and suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues.

You will be expected to figure things out independently but will be provided the resources to do so and encouraged to ask questions when unsure.

If you prove to be indispensable to the practice, you will be strongly considered for an associate position upon successful completion of articling.

  • Organization/time-management skills
  • Proactivity in resolving problems without having to be asked
  • Research and drafting skills
  • Personability and compassion balanced with objectivity

Application

Please apply by forwarding your CV and (where available) your law school transcripts and a detailed cover letter outlining the nature of your past legal work and your specific interests. Also include a writing sample of your draft of comprehensive guilty plea directions. These would be the type of instructions that would be signed by an accused person prior to pleading guilty and would inform the accused of any consequences that they stand to face as a result of the plea and anything else required by law.

Foreign trained/NCA students who will be eligible to start articling in the 2025-6 articling cycle are encouraged to apply.
